Gerhard Prinsloo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Agriculture and Animal Health at the University of South Africa, and group leader of the Indigenous Plants Research. The indigenous plants research group focuses on cultivation of indigenous plants used as food, medicine and cosmeceuticals, and the associated effects of the environment, including soil on the chemical profile and biological activity.

Metabolomic analysis is applied, to identify the changes in the metabolome due to external factors and the effect of climate change and associated effects on the beneficial properties of the plants. The ultimate aim is to develop guidelines for commercial production without compromising the safety and efficacy of the cultivated material.
